Researchers recently studied the children of women treated with 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-P) during the second and third trimester for the prevention of preterm labor. These women were part of an earlier study which showed the effectiveness of 17-P in preventing recurrent preterm birth. Researchers interviewed caretakers about the childrens’ overall health, and examined them for physical and develomental problems as well as gender specific play behaviors.

The study showed no significant difference between the children of mothers treated with 17-P and those treated with a placebo in regards to overall health, genital anomalies or gender specific behaviors at an average of 2 years of age.

This is great news for anyone comtemplating another pregnancy after their preemie, and for all of us who have already undergone treatment with 17-P during a subsequent pregnancy. I’ll be looking forward to hearing about additional follow-up when these children are older.
