Amazing Health Benefits of Green Tea and EGCG
Thursday, March 13, 2008 7:21
Modern medical research aimed at unlocking the secrets of green tea has shown that components in green tea may reduce the risk of certain cancers, aid in weight loss and prevent heart disease. But knowledge of the benefits of green tea is nothing new. In China, green tea has been used for its medicinal properties for at least 4,000 years, and an ancient Chinese proverb says it is “Better to be deprived of food for three days, than tea for one.” Tea seems to be a truly remarkable beverage, so what exactly is it that makes green tea so good for you?
EGCG
One of the wonder chemicals found in green tea is epigallocatechin gallate, which is a substance more commonly known as EGCG. EGCG is an antioxidant, which means that it stabilizes free radicals and may prevent them from causing damage to our cells. Free radicals cause damage to the DNA and other molecules, a process which may lead to cancer. Green tea also contains other antioxidants like vitamins A and C, and beta-carotene.
Interesting medical research into the effects of EGCG has shown that:
- EGCG consumed from green tea extract increases 24 hour energy expenditure and the oxidation of fat in humans.
- EGCG interrupts communication signals between leukemia cells, helping to kill them.
- EGCG reduces the risk of esophageal, colorectal and pancreatic cancer in certain groups.
- EGCG reduces the development of atherosclerosis in the blood vessels of laboratory animals.
Why is Green Tea Different?
While green tea and other Chinese teas (oolong tea, black tea) all come from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, green tea is processed differently. Producing black and oolong tea requires the tea leaves to be at least partially fermented. This fermentation process oxidizes EGCG and other beneficial compounds, reducing their effectiveness. On the other hand, green tea is steamed, preventing oxidation.
Drinking Green Tea
Green tea comes in many varieties with unique tastes and characteristics, including Sencha, Dragonwell, Gunpowder, Hojcha, Idulgashinna and Matcha. While Sencha is the most commonly used green tea and its flavor varies widely, Matcha on the other hand, is a fairly bitter variety, principally used in the Japanese tea ceremony. So, if your first thought is that you don’t like green tea, you might benefit from checking out some different varieties.
If you’re looking for a more unique green tea experience, Revolution Tea provides unique flavor options, including a Tropical Tea variety infused with pineapple, and other truly delicious sounding blends. There really is something out there for everyone looking to enjoy the health benefits of green tea.

I love green tea. I would drink it even if it was so mega healthy. I always strive to purchase high grade green tea. I buy my green tea at http://www.tealaden.com. I enjoy their tea as well as the free samples I receive with my orders. I have added several to my must always have teas in the cupboard.
