Circumcision Rates Lowest in Western United States
Thursday, January 17, 2008 20:04Number crunching by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality revealed that in 2005, circumcision rates varied widely by region across the United States. The Midwest sported the highest rate, at 75%, while the western US had the lowest rate at only 31%. In total, the circumcision rate is 56%, a rate that has been fairly steady for the past decade. The little fact that I found the most interesting after hearing many people say that they wanted their son circumcised so he’ll look like everyone else, is that at it’s peak in 1980, the circumcision rate was only 65%.
So, for anyone who chose to circumcise their son so “they’d look like everyone else,” you’d best keep living east of the Rockies. For anyone still trying to make this decision, I’d also like to point out that the American Academy of Pediatrics itself says that there isn’t enough medical evidence to support routine circumcision.
