Depression Era Cooking Highlights Benefits of Real Food

Eating healthier is just one of the reasons why I’ve spent so much time over the past year learning to cook real food, from real ingredients. While allergies and other issues were the driving force in many of the early changes we made in our diet, a desire to live a self sufficient, more sustainable lifestyle has inspired me to continue learning to garden, can and cook from scratch.
With the way out economy has been going, I think our family was on right the mark when we decided to start becoming less dependent on convenience foods, and more capable of “fending for ourselves”. This mindset isn’t all based on the economy though – it also comes in very handy when we find ourselves snowed in or trapped at home with sick kids!
So, when my husband Rob,sent me a link this morning to a YouTube video by DepressionCooking I was intrigued. Once I had some peace and quiet, I found myself glued to my computer monitor watching all 8 episodes of Great Depression Cooking, where a 93 year old depression survivor named Clara shares memories alongside the simple meals her family ate during the depression.
While I found them all fascinating, I was most impressed by the video below, where Clara shares her recipe for peppers and eggs, along with thoughts about how well her family ate because they had a garden and chickens in the backyard. If that isn’t food for thought, I don’t know what is. Enjoy!
