Eat REAL Food Month!

Eat REAL Food BannerDid you know that March is National Frozen food Month in the US?  No?  Nether did I, at least until yesterday, when I discovered a National Frozen Food Month emblem in my local Safeway ad.

While I know that there are many ways to eat healthy utilizing frozen fruits and veggies, grocery stores are placing most of their National Frozen Food Month advertising dollars on frozen convenience foods like tv dinners, breakfast sandwiches and ice cream bars.  From my personal observations in grocery store checkout lines, the average American household doesn’t need any encouragement when it comes to eating frozen junk food.  We seem to have a solid handle on that on our own.

As I was chatting about the Frozen Food Month ads on Twitter yesterday, I came up with the idea to host National Eat REAL Food month right here on KristieMcNealy.com.  Each day this month, I’ll be highlighting information about cooking from scratch, preparing healthy meals from frozen foods, and other things we can do to get back to basics with our diets.  I’ll also be using Mr. Linky to allow you to link out to your own posts about healthy nutrition and cooking from scratch.

EditI’ll have an Eat REAL Food Month banner ready some time this afternoon.  Please come back and grab it if you’d like to join in! The banner for Eat REAL Food month is up!  Grab it using the code in my sidebar, or copy it and upload to your site.

I’m with you. Real food is the best! When I go shopping, I start in produce, work my way through fresh meat, and then pick up the odd things I ever buy that come in boxes, bags or cans. I consider it my calling to challenge the teen-age checkers who have never eaten anything except frozen pizza and canned soup. Any day that they don’t ask me, “What is this?” I know I have failed. I’m celebrating REAL FOOD month right along with you.

That’s so funny. I’m always getting questions about what the vegetables in my cart are. Sadly, these questions sometimes come from clerks who are old enough to be my mother. I also get a lot of “What do you do with these?” kind of questions. Especially when I’m stocking up on dried beans or something like that!
