Pregnant Belly ShotA recent case report out of Germany provides new hope for women diagnosed with cancer who want to preserve their fertility.  A woman recently had her menstrual periods restored after her own ovarian tissue was implanted into her pelvis.  The ovarian tissue had been removed and frozen after the woman was diagnosed with anal cancer in 2004.  The cancer treatment was successful, but the woman hadn’t had a period in two years when the ovarian tissue was inserted endoscopically into her pelvis.

It’s common for women to lose their fertility as a result of cancer therapy.  When young women are diagnosed with cancer, it is important for them to get accurate and timely information about all of the options available that may help them preserve or restore their fertility in the future.

Now that the ovarian tissue has been replaced, and her menstrual periods have resumed, this woman may be able to become pregnant.  It hasn’t happened yet, so I’ll be keeping my eye out for further updates on her case.
