Preemies, BabyWearing and #MotrinMoms

Blogging for Prematurity AwarenessI was planning on sharing some links today, from some of the other bloggers who have been joining me in spreading awareness about prematurity in honor of Prematurity Awareness Month.  Then, yesterday, a little debacle chronicled on Twitter as #motrinmoms sent me off in another direction.

Recently, Motrin released an advertising campaign including a video on YouTube aimed at babywearing moms, which states at one point that “SUPPOSEDLY, it’s a real bonding experience” and insinuates that many moms wear their babies just because it’s in fashion.  The ad, which touts Motrin as the solution to babywearing induced backpain, has resulted in significant backlash on both Twitter, and blogs written by moms, dads and social media experts.

In reality, while toting your baby for hours on end can give anybody back pain, wearing your baby can help soothe them, and improve bonding.  Babies who are worn, and have their needs met right away, actually cry less.  Plus, for a mom who’s had a baby in the NICU, finally being able to keep them close to you is sublime.

One caveat with wearing a preemie, is that not all carriers provide the support that preemies need.  Preemies can have an increased risk for positional asphyxia, meaning that in certain positions, they’re oxgen saturations can drop and they can stop breathing.  This is part of the reason why preemies have to undergo a carseat test before leaving the NICU.

If you’re a mom who wants to wear their preemie, check with your doctor, and then go check out My Baby Nest.  My Baby Nest is the only carrier that provides the support that preemies and newborns need, while still allowing numerous carrying positions!

Kristie, I checked out My Baby Nest’s website and it looks incredibly comfortable and versatile. I have tried other slings with my first two children but didn’t really like them. Would you recommend this sling over other ones? Even if the baby is not a preemie? Thanks so much!! I saw the motrin ad, and found it very condescending. Personally, I think carrying those car seat carriers around is a much bigger back-breaker!

    Elissa-

I think it would be great for any baby, especially with other kids to chase around. I know with a regular sling, you usually need a hand to keep the baby steady when you are bending and moving around. This seems much more secure.
