Study on Preemies and Cord Clamping to Begin
Monday, July 27, 2009 18:04A little over a year ago, I wrote about a small study by Dr. Judith Mercer, which showed that delayed umbilical cord clamping might reduce the risk of intraventricular hemorrhage and sepsis in preemies. Today I read that Mercer, a nurse midwife, has begun a much larger trial of cord clamp timing in premature babies.
In addition to reducing brain bleeds and sepsis, earlier results indicate that delaying cord clamping until as little as 30-45 seconds after birth could also improve brain function in white males born premature. If these results are verified by the new, larger study, it will be an amazing breakthrough in improving outcomes in preemies.

Why do you specifically say “premature white males”?

Because that was the group in the study that had significant differences between early and late cord clamping. This is important because for comparable gestational ages and weights, white male preemies tend to have a worse prognosis than other premature infants.

There’s always lotus birth of which my wife has had a couple cases. They just leave the cord attached to the placenta and the baby until the the cord falls off, usually in a few days. The placenta is toted around in a bag until then I’m sure that plenty of time to reduce any impact!
Must be a Boulder thing too

OMG, so true!! I’m sure leaving the placenta attached until it rotted and fell off would be more than enough time! Has your wife seen complications directly from the lotus birth practice. It kind of sounds like a disaster as far as infection goes…
