A while back, my husband and I spent some serious time discussing and prioritizing our current business endeavors along with our new projects and ideas. Lately, we’ve been running in circles trying to keep up with a few too many blogs, two sets of forums, and all of our day to day business responsibilities like writing up estimates, shipping packages and paying the bills. Amidst all of this chaos are three kids to take care of.

At the moment of our discussion, we were running five websites, which included two forums and three blogs. We were also in the midst of preparing for the launch of a sixth site and starting to write a book. We were constantly working, and it seemed like nothing was really getting done. Needless to say, something had to go.

So, how did we decide??

  1. Show me the money - Since we have a growing family to support, one of our first concerns had to be cash flow. Obviously, we aren’t going to close down our the company that funds the rest of our endeavors, regardless of whether it is fun or not. It is financially successful, and I just can’t imagine how we’d be able to justify shutting the doors on a money maker at this point.
  2. Where is the passion? - Some things sound like great ideas at the outset, but once you get knee deep in them you realize they aren’t quite what you thought. Other things turn out to be true passions, or at least more than marginally enjoyable. We have a couple of endeavors that fall into this category.
  3. What is the potential? - One of our endeavors in particular, is cool, but has little potential for monetization any time in the near future. Others aren’t making much right now, but have great potential to be real money makers in the next 6-12 months.
  4. After weighing all the pros and cons, we dumped one site altogether, deleted one set of forums, and created some new milestones we’ll need to achieve to keep our other projects going. Hopefully with this new arrangement we’ll manage to be more productive with the projects we’ve decided to continue.
