US Gets a D on Premature Birth Report Card – Blogging for Prematurity Awareness
Wednesday, November 12, 2008 20:23
In honor of Prematurity Awareness Day, the March of Dimes released their national 2008 Premature Birth Report Card today. They gave each state, and the country as a whole, a letter grade based on how their premature birth rate compared to the Healthy People 2010 goal of 7.6%. Not surprisingly, with a premature birth rate of over 12%, the US received a ‘D’, as did my home state, Colorado.
Sadly, not one state got an ‘A’, and 18 states, Puerto Rico and Washington DC all received an ‘F’. With a premature birth rate of 9%, Vermont scored the best in the nation, receiving a ‘B’.
You can check out how your state scored at the March of Dimes website. While you’re there, take a moment to sign the Petition for Preemies.
